Non-equivalence often poses quite problematical issues among many translators. Whether an acceptable and well-comprehended translation is achieved depends on what and how the translation strategies being used. This research is conducted with the aims to discover the matters above through the analysis of Amba novel and its English version The Question of Red. By adopting the qualitative method that focuses on non-numerical data as the analytical basis, the researcher attempts to find the data of non-equivalences within culture specific concept and the strategies of non-equivalence based on Newmark‘s cultural categories and Baker ̳s non-equivalence theory. The result finds six categories of culture specific concept within the comparison of four chapters, namely 1) ecology, 2) public life, 3) social life, 4) personal life, 5) custom and pursuit and 6) private passion. Most of Baker ̳s translation strategies are applied within the novel, whereby the translation using neutral/less expressive word, loan word/loan word with explanation and paraphrase using unrelated word are the common translation strategies being used. The translation by a neutral/less expressive word is able to render cultural items in the simplest and accessible way, while the loan and unrelated word can deliver insights of cultural aspects that have significant connection to the message of the source text. The research concludes that the application of the translation strategies depends on the necessity or the unnecessity to keep the cultural values contained within the non-equivalence terms to the messages conveyed by the source text.
