The first three chapters oofer an introduction to information seeking. chapter one gives a general overview of information-seeking systems followed by several sample searches in the world wide web, a university online public access catalogue, an electronic journal, an online bibilographic database, and an online biographical directory. Chapter 2 turn attention the information seeker. Chapter 3 presents a historical perspective on the development of electronic information resources and services, and describes a selection of such services. Chapter 4 looks at the role of controlled vocabularies - thesauri, classification shemes and subject headings - as one way of representing both information sources and information needs, as well as the tactics that must be employed if instead the source and need are expressed in natural langiage terms. Chapter 5 turns to the ways in which information is organized in databases and the way database indexes are structured for searching, as well as hypertext structures that facilitate browsing rather than searching. Chapter 6 deals with searching : database selection, term selection and combination, and data outputting. Chapter 7 considers the alternative information - seeking approach - browsing. Chapter 8 oofers an overview of interfaces. Chapter 9 builds on the advice offered in the earlier chapters by preseting a series of searches.
