The purpose of this research is to find out how Dr. Martin Luther King confront racial
discrimination using nonviolent resistance method in Selma. The film, directed by Ava
DuVernay, tells the story about the events that occurred in Alabama during the American
Civil Rights Movement, with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leading the movement in a real
historical event despite violent opposition. The researcher used qualitative research with
descriptive analysis is employed as the methodology. The researcher used nonviolent theory
by Gene Sharp to provide a comprehensive analysis about the method, organizational, and
moral dimensions of the nonviolent resistance in Selma. This findings reveal that Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., was successfully confronting racial discrimination using nonviolent
resistance method in Selma film. In this film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. shows his leadership
embodied nonviolent resistance method, which emphasizes how peaceful resistance,
disciplined strategy and systematic approach could dismantle racial discrimination and
weakening oppressive systems. The research also highlights the nonviolent resistance
method led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., such as protest and persuasion, noncooperation
and intervention effectively employed to challenge racial discrimination, achieve significant
political change and were also instrumental in pressuring the federal government to enact
the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
