This research discusses the portrayal of an ex-convict character and the construction of an ex-convict’s negative image by society through stigma in The Unforgivable film. The method employed is qualitative research, and the theories applied include the theory of characterization by Joseph M. Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie, the theory of stigma by Erving Goffman, and the concept of stigma by Bruce G. Link and J. Co Phelan. This research aims to reveal how an ex-convict character is described and how society constructs the negative image of ex-convicts through stigma based on the film. The findings show that Ruth Slater, as the main character, was imprisoned for a wrongful conviction instead of committing a crime. She is also portrayed as an ex-convict who has characteristics that do not align with the negative image of ex-convicts shared by society. Ruth is a hard worker, ambitious, talented, affectionate, and responsible ex-convict. Her characteristics help to demonstrate that her negative image as an ex-convict is constructed by society through the stigma against ex-convicts, which encompasses the act of labeling, stereotyping, separation, and the experience of status loss in society and discrimination. In conclusion, the film attempts to construct the idea that the negative image of ex-convicts is not always inherent characteristics exhibited by anyone with a criminal record; instead, it is constructed by society.
