The use of euphemisms in cnbc articles during the ‘tech winter’ phenomenon

No image available for this title
This research examines the use of euphemisms in CNBC articles during the "tech winter" phenomenon. The study aims to classify euphemisms and analyze the resulting semantic changes, employing Allan and Burridge's theory of euphemism and Dirk Geeraerts' theory of semantic change. A qualitative method was employed to identify euphemisms, exploring their semantic changes, semantic relations, and implications. This research found that the types of euphemisms that were used the most frequently were circumlocution and metaphor. There were 11 circumlocutions and ten metaphors. There was also one case of one-for-one substitution and understatement. By examining 12 representative data samples, the research uncovered semantic changes resulting from the use of euphemisms. Seven examples showed specialization, where euphemisms reduced the meaning, while five instances demonstrated generalization, where euphemisms expanded the meaning. Notably, the sense relations between lexemes remained intact, as synonymy, hyponymy, and meronymy were identified through componential analysis. The findings of the research highlight that euphemisms in CNBC articles during the "tech winter" phenomenon served multiple purposes, including reducing negative connotations, softening the tone, and facilitating diplomatic engagement, rather than solely replacing rude words. The findings shed light on the intentional deployment of euphemisms as linguistic strategies in media discourse during the “winter tech” phenomenon.
