This research examines how Sufiya Ahmed’s Secrets of Henna Girl challenges patriarchal practices by depicting the female character as struggling to fight for their rights through Islamic tenets and education. By using qualitative method and close textual analysis, this research examines how the novel opposes to patriarchal culture and the misconception of Islam as religion that supports discrimination against women. The data used is the words, sentences, and dialogues that contain the aspect of patriarchal culture and patriarchal resistance in the novel Secrets of the Henna Girl. From the data analysis, the novel uses literary devices to portray patriarchal culture with the following aspects: the female characters receive violence patriarchy which depicted in how men are portrayed as Tiger King which explains how men are stronger than women. Second, the female characters receive culture patriarchy which depicted in how women are represented as witches and how women beauty is only their quality. Third, women received culture and household production patriarchy which depicted through how women are metaphorically considered like glass vases and how women are considered as sacrificial lamb by being forced to marry. Fourth, the female characters also receive household production patriarchy by being called out as drama queen when they try to pursue their education and career. Furthermore, it is found that even though the female characters receives so many patriarchal practices, the novel is able to depict them as resisting through education and Islamic values. The novel also uses Qur’an, hadith, and Islamic teachings as a way to disrupt the misconception of Islam as a religion that supports discrimination against women.
