Two short stories entitled Bob Darling and The Sugar-Tit written by
Carolyn Cooke are the unit analysis of this research. The research aims to find out
how the main female characters are depicted in patriarchal culture in which in this
culture, woman is very vulnerable for gender discrimination. Moreover, this
gender discrimination also can be strengthened by social segregation such as class
differentiation. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, Mansour
Fakih’s manifestations of gender discrimination, and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s
intersectionality concept about the connection of multiple dimensions such as
gender and class in making discrimination.
The results show that Carla and Giddy, as main female characters
experience gender discrimination such as stereotype, subordination,
marginalization, violence against woman and job burden because of their gender
and social class. Patriarchal culture works tightly when woman is in the lower
class so that the woman suffers discrimination more. In contrast, when woman is
in the upper class, the patriarchal culture does not work tightly so that woman is
less discriminated. In conclusion, class has a great influence on the gender
discrimination especially in patriarchal culture.
