No image available for this title
This research aims to show how Aron Różycki as the main character receives his
trauma during the Holocaust in Warsaw Ghetto which later forms his identity in
Jim Shepard’s novel The Book of Aron published in 2015 by Knopf Publishing
Group with the use of Cathy Caruth’s approach in Trauma Theory in literature.
This research uses the qualitative method and descriptive analysis technique in
analysing the data. The data is collected from the words, sentences, and
paragraphs in the novel which indicates the symptoms of trauma. The findings of
this research show that Aron’s trauma came from his experiences of witnessing
the deaths of his friend, Lutek and his Mother. His trauma, in the form of
flashbacks, caused him to develop the anxiety disorder and insomnia which
caused the inability for him to be separated from Dr. Korczak. His previous
identity shattered because of the trauma which makes him valued himself based
on the traumatic experiences that he had, blaming himself upon the trauma that he
had and to be born as a Jew during the World War II.
