This thesis aims to understand how Lucy Barton fulfills her needs in the
novel, through Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs theory. The
writer uses the interpretation method to analyze the character of Lucy Barton and
her five levels of human needs. The result of this research is that the major character
in the novel, Lucy Barton, has smart, hardworking, obedient, loving, and lonely
characteristics. The writer argues that Lucy Barton, as a woman, has successfully fulfilled the five levels of her needs. She fulfills her physiological needs and her safety needs by doing some sacrifices and imagination. Lucy Barton also fulfills her love and belonging needs by deciding to divorce William and marry another man. Lucy managed to get recognition from people by selling her books which made her successfully fulfill her esteem needs and this lead Lucy to reach the next stage, which is self-actualization. She fulfills this highest level of human needs by accepting her true self as a woman within her own beliefs and other’s support. The writer finds that Lucy's character shows that women have the ability to act and decide something in order to fulfill their needs according to each roles they have in society
